Appendix - How to Compute the GPA

The Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of credits attempted.

The method of computing the quality points of a course is to multiply the credit hours a class is worth (i.e. 4-credit class, 3-credit class, 2-credit class or 1-credit class) by the points for the grade received.

Below are two methods which may be used to compute the GPA.

Method 1

Course Credit Grade Quality Points Computation Total
College English 4 C+ 2.4 2.4 x 4 9.6
Lang Arts Methods 3 B- 2.7 2.7 x 3 8.1
Principles of T & L 4 C+ 2.4 2.4 x 4 9.6
Undrstndng T’ Lrnr 4 B 3.0 3.0 x 4 12.0
TIE 1 2 B 3.0 3.0 x 2 6.0
TIE 2 3 B- 2.7 2.7 x 3 8.1
Math Yr2 4 C+ 2.4 2.4 x 4 9.6
Science Education 3 B- 2.7 2.7 x 3 8.1
Music 8 B- 2.7 2.7 x 8 21.6
Visual Arts 8 B- 2.7 2.7 x 8 21.6

3 B- 2.7 2.7 x 3 8.1
TP 9 B- 2.7 2.7 x 9 24.3
Math Yr3 2 B- 2.7 2.7 x 2 5.4
Advanced Biology 12 B- 2.7 2.7 x 12 32.4
Total 72       191.7 GPA = 2.66

Method 2

An easier way to figure a student’s GPA is to add the number of credits for the classes in which the student received an A and multiply by 4; add the number of credits for the classes in which the student received a B+ and multiply by 3.4, etc.

Don't forget to add the number of credits for which the student received an E and multiply by 0. Divide the total number of quality points received by the total number of credit hours.

For example (method 2):

Exam Results
The student earned:
Total # of Credits Computation Total QP
B (or quality points 3.0) in 2 courses 6 credits (4 + 2) Therefore multiple
3.0 by 6
18
B- (2.7) in 9 courses 51
(3+3+3+8+8+3+9
+2+12)
2.7 x 51 137.7
C+ (2.4) in 4 courses 15 (4+4+4+3) 2.4 x 15 36
Total 72   191.7 GPA = 197.7 / 72 = 2.66

In both instances the formula used to compute the GPA is:

Total Quality Points          = GPA i.e. 191.7 = 2.66
Total number of credits                   72
