Year One (Requirements for Candidates under 30 yrs old)

To be admitted to Year I of the Diploma Programme, candidates under 30 yrs old must satisfy the following minimum requirements, mature candidates (over 30) who do not fit any of the criteria below may still apply for entry under the guidelines for mature entry: 

(i) Five CXC/CSEC subjects including English A at the General Proficiency Grades I, II and III (effective June 1998) or their equivalent. A candidate with four CXC/ CSEC subjects at General Proficiency Grades I, II and III as above and two subjects at Grade III obtained prior to June 1998 will be deemed to have satisfied the minimum entry requirements. English A must be obtained at General Proficiency Grade I, II or III (effective 1998). 

(ii) Students reading Early Childhood, Primary, Literary Studies and Special Education should normally possess the requirements stated in (i) which should include a science subject such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Integrated Science, or Human and Social Biology or a Social Science subject such as History, Geography or Social Studies. 

(iii) In addition to requirements set out at (i) and (ii), students reading Primary specializations must have the following: 

(a) Literacy Studies Primary -CXC CSEC English B General Proficiency Grades I, II or III, or GCE ‘O’ Level English Literature Grades A, B or C or their equivalent; 

(b) Spanish Primary -CXC CSEC Spanish General Proficiency Grades I, II or III, or GCE ‘O’ Level Spanish Grades A, B or C or their equivalent. 

(iv) Students entering the Early Childhood, Primary, and Special Education programmes whose qualifications do not include Mathematics at the CXC CSEC General Proficiency Grades I, II or III or GCE ‘O’ Level Grades A, B or C or their equivalent, may be accepted if they hold one of the following qualifications: CXC CSEC General Proficiency Grade IV and Basic Proficiency Grades 11, and III, GCE ‘O’ Level Grade D, Junior High School Examination Certificate (JHSEC) High Average and Distinguished ranges, Jamaica School Certificate, Grade Nine Achievement (70% or above), and New Secondary Programme Certificate (NSPC) Mastery level. 

(v) Students reading Secondary Education should normally possess within the general requirement, passes in their two teaching subjects at CXC CSEC General Proficiency Grades I or II or GCE ‘O’ level Grades A or B or their equivalent. 

(vi) Students entering the Early Childhood programme may use the NCTVET level II qualifications in Early Childhood as one of the 5 subjects required for matriculation. Students holding this qualification will be exempt from course work assignments and examinations for the Child Development course (i.e. ED 103EC). However, they will be required to audit this course and attend at least 90% of scheduled lectures. 

(vii) Applicants holding the High School Equivalency Programme (HISEP) certification, having successfully completed all five subject areas, will be deemed to have fully satisfied JBTE entry requirements into the Early Childhood, Primary, and Special Education programmes. However, for acceptance into the Primary specialization programmes or any secondary programme they must have additional qualifications as follows:
  • Literacy Studies Primary – CXC CSEC English B General Proficiency Grades I, II or III, or GCE ‘O’ Level English Literature Grades A, B or C or their equivalent; 
  • Spanish Primary -CXC CSEC Spanish General Proficiency Grades I, II or III, or GCE ‘O’ Level Spanish Grades A, B or C or their equivalent; 
  • Secondary programmes – passes in their teaching subjects at CXC CSEC General Proficiency Grades I or II, or GCE ‘O’ Level Grades A or B or their equivalent. 
(viii) Where any college has admitted a student into a JBTE programme without his/her having met all requirements set out above, the student will not be eligible to write any JBTE examination until all matriculation requirements have been satisfied. 

(ix) For the purposes of equivalence at 2a(i): 

CXC Basic I, GCE ‘O’ Level at Grade A -C; SSC National Assessment Levels 4 and 5;  City and Guilds and ULCI General 2; Passes in First-year level Technical courses from an accredited institution, RSA Stage 2 and passes in the Certificate in Secondary Education of the U.K., Associated Examining Board (A.E.B.), Royal Schools of Music or Trinity College in Musical performance at Grade IV, or other certification approved by the Ministry of Education will be accepted as equivalent to CXC General Proficiency.

Candidates with a high-school diploma from an accredited American or Canadian Institution will be accepted as having the equivalent qualifications for entry to year 1 of the Diploma course, provided that the passes shown in the transcripts are at the level required for the programme the candidate desires to pursue. 

(x) In addition to the general matriculation requirements outlined in (i) to (vi), students may have to satisfy other requirements specific to individual departments.
